Hi Dave, so glad to have found your blog.

I am adding a tiny retail space to my art studio & need to get an entry-level cash register. There are quite a few on Craigslist, but I really don't know much about makes/models, necessary options, etc.

It would be nice to be able to hook it up to my laptop & integrate it with my accounting system, but it's not a must-have, as i don't anticipate heavy sales--at least not for a while.

I will start taking credit cards at some point, so getting a register with that add-on capability would be good, but again, not urgent. cost is pretty important as this store is an experiment so i can't invest too much into it financially.

I'd very much appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Thank you!

Nancy

Hi Nancy if you are owner opertated and not high volume I reccomend just staying with an entry level machine like you mentioned. We all most never reccomend interfacing your cash register to accounting for many real world reasons. People always think it is magic and it is far from it. Most cases you could have made the journal enteries much faster then interfacing and you would not have the expense. Credit card interface is great and you would gain more investing in that as oppossed to the account interface.

You should think about if you need a receipt and journal printer or if you can get by with just a receipt. I like a machine with both but many people today do not use a jourmal tape. If you want both I would wait for the new models coming soon that have both at an entry level price!

hi dave, i had programmed clerks and codes into my sam4s er390, not sure what i did wrong but it requires the clerks to enter their code oafter every transaction, how do i reverse/change this function. cannot find it in the manual

Dave said...

OK no problem that feature is in the system options. Look at option #3 on page 78 and your choices are Stay Down or Pop Up if you want a clerk to log in and stay logged in then select Stay Down which is 0 and that will do it! Remember they stay logged in until logged off so no a great amount of security

Dave, got a new ER-390M a couple days ago, and need to replace the thermal register tape. There are NO instructions in the manual

It is not in the manual however it could not get easier. Open the printer, drop in the new roll with paper coming off the bottom, make sure you have torn off the glue from the leading edge, manually drape paper past the point where the printer closes together, close the printer, make sure you feed paper through the opening in the machine cover and you should be good. the brochure does display the printer while open and you can find it at SAM4s ER-390M

Mike most often it is because the large spring in the back of the drawer is broken or there is paper or something wrapped up in it. Most oftem it is the end is broken off. Can be replaced pretty easy by an end-user. I don't sell parts for Casios only SAM4s Cash Registers
